Ancient Temples of Karnataka

Temples in Karnataka boast of Hoysala, Chalukya, and Vijayanagar architecture. These temples are built by various Kings during the glorious era Karnataka has witnessed.


Chennakeshava Temple  & Halibedu Temple

These temples have vast complex and beautifully carved structures giving them an old-world charm, Walls are adorned with many important events from Mahabharat and Ramayan.
The Hoysala Dynasty ruled for over three centuries from the 10-14th century and built many beautiful temples in Karnataka
Chennakesava temple is a Vishnu temple on the banks of river Kaveri while Halebide Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Both of these temples are the grandest examples of Hoysala architecture.
These temples were built-in early 12th  & 13th Century, during this period Belur was the capital of the Hoysala Kingdom until annexed by Allauddin Khilji

It took 3 generations and around 100 years to build the Chennakeswa temple, Idols are carved so beautifully that they shine and almost look like grillwork, a few of the unique sculptors are a lady wearing heels and a woman adorning herself in the mirror.

Avani Temple ( Kolar – Karnataka )

Avani temple is one of the few temples dedicated to goddess Sita, It is believed rishi Valmiki lived here, and later on even goddess Sita lived here in an ashram where she gave birth to Luv & Kush.  This temple was built in the 10th century by the Nolamba rulers.
This temple can be easily covered from Bangalore for a day trip.
